The $200 Upsell Hiding in Every Service Call

Newsletter · Published 2026-08-29

You're already in the house. The truck is already there. The customer already trusts you enough to hand you a key or let you through the door. And you're leaving money on the table every single time you pack up and drive away without offering one more thing.

Smart-home upsells aren't a gimmick. In practice, trades businesses that systematically offer the right devices at the end of a service call convert 40–50% of customers and add between $150 and $400 per job — without a second trip, without a sales team, and without a catalogue.

Here's how to do it.

Why the upsell works at this exact moment

The customer just watched you solve a problem. Their trust in you is at its peak. They haven't had to call three people to get a quote. They're not shopping around. They're in a yes mindset.

That window closes the second you leave.

Contrast that with any other moment you could try to sell — a cold follow-up email, a promo flyer, a Facebook ad. None of those hit when the customer is standing in their own house, already satisfied, already holding their wallet.

You are the world's best-positioned salesperson for exactly four to six minutes at the end of every visit.

The devices that actually convert (by trade)

Not all smart devices are equal. Customers will say yes to things that solve an obvious pain or feel like an upgrade to something they already use. They will not say yes to something that sounds complicated or requires an app tutorial on your part.

Plumbers: Smart leak detectors ($40–80 wholesale, sell for $120–180 installed) convert at near 50% when you say "I'm putting one of these under every sink I touch." Customers with a recent leak history say yes almost automatically. Smart shut-off valves for the main line ($150–250 installed) are a harder sell but land well in homes with older pipes.

Electricians: Smart outlets and in-wall dimmers ($25–60 installed each) are the gateway. They're fast, they're visible, and the customer immediately sees the result. Smart panels and whole-home circuit monitors are the bigger ticket — real numbers show a $350–600 install when bundled with a service call — but they require a slightly longer conversation.

HVAC: The smart thermostat is the most proven upsell in the trades. If you're not installing an Ecobee or Nest on every system service visit where the customer has a dumb thermostat, you are leaving $180–280 on the table every time. Conversion rates in practice sit around 45% when it's offered as part of the service, not as a separate pitch.

How to offer it without sounding like a salesperson

You don't pitch. You mention.

"While I was in there I noticed you've got an older thermostat — the smart ones pay for themselves in about a year on energy savings. I can swap it out now for $220 all-in, takes me 20 minutes. Want me to do it?"

That's it. One sentence of context, one sentence of value, one yes-or-no question.

The mistake most tradies make is either never asking or over-explaining. The customer doesn't need the full feature list. They need to know it's worth it and that you're the right person to do it right now.

Build a simple kit and carry it every day

You don't need a stockroom. You need a small tote in the truck with six to eight of the highest-converting devices for your trade. Spend $400–600 stocking it once. Replenish as you sell.

When a customer says yes and you don't have the part, you lose the sale 80% of the time. They'll Google it, decide it's complicated, and never follow through.

Having it in your hand is the difference between a $200 add-on and a missed opportunity.

The other piece: make sure you're actually answering or capturing calls from customers who want this kind of trusted tradie. One missed call from a high-value homeowner asking about a smart thermostat install is $300 gone before you even knew it existed. VettedCalls exists for exactly that.

This week's move

Pick the single highest-converting device for your trade, buy six units today, put them in the truck, and offer one at your next three jobs using the one-sentence script above.

Forward this

If another tradie you know is still losing leads to voicemail, send them VettedCalls.
